Pavers vs Concrete in Arizona

How the two hold up in Valley heat and soil, how repairs compare, and which one fits your project. From a family crew that installs pavers across the Phoenix Valley.

The short answer

Both are real options, and the right one depends on what you want the space to do. Poured concrete is simple and does the job. Pavers cost more upfront for most projects and give you the look, the cooler surface, and the easy repairs. In Arizona, where the ground moves and summers punish every surface, that difference matters.

One thing to know about us upfront: we install pavers. We don't pour concrete. If plain concrete is the right fit for your project, we'll tell you so at the free visit, and you'll want a concrete contractor for the pour. What we can do is give you a straight comparison, because replacing cracked slabs with pavers is core work for us.

Side by side

Pavers Poured concrete
Arizona summers Lighter colors and travertine stay noticeably cooler underfoot. A plain slab soaks up heat and holds it into the evening.
Cracking Hundreds of small pieces flex with the soil instead of fighting it. One rigid piece. When the ground moves enough, it cracks, and the crack is permanent.
Repairs A damaged paver gets lifted and replaced, and the repair blends into the pattern. Cracks get patched, and patches show. Bad sections mean a re-pour.
The look Patterns, borders, colors, and textures you pick. One uniform surface. Clean, but plain.
Using it No curing wait. Ready to use the same day for most installs. Needs days to cure before it takes weight.

Why Arizona is the deciding factor

Valley soil expands and contracts with moisture and heat, and summer surface temperatures swing hard between afternoon and night. A slab is one rigid piece sitting on that moving ground. Pavers are a flexible surface: hundreds of individual stones on a compacted base, moving with the ground instead of cracking against it.

Already have a cracked slab?

That's one of the most common projects we do: tear out the old concrete, build a proper base, and lay pavers in its place. We handle the demolition and haul-away ourselves, so one crew of driveway paver contractors takes it from cracked slab to finished driveway or patio. Common questions

Do pavers really last longer than concrete in Arizona?
Both can last a long time when built right. The difference shows when the ground moves: a slab cracks as one piece, while pavers shift as many small pieces and can be re-set. Arizona’s expansive soil and summer heat keep the ground moving.
Can you install pavers over my existing concrete?
Sometimes, depending on the condition and height of the slab. We look at it during the free visit and tell you which route makes sense. When removal is the better call, we handle the tear-out and haul-away ourselves.
