The short answer
Around a Phoenix pool, the deck has one job above all: staying comfortable under bare feet in summer. Travertine is a Valley classic for exactly that. Porcelain is the modern option that keeps its color and shrugs off stains. Both work. The right one depends on the look you want and how you use the space.
Side by side
| Travertine | Porcelain | |
|---|---|---|
| Bare feet in summer | A Phoenix favorite for a reason: it reflects heat instead of holding it. | Depends on the color. Lighter porcelain runs cooler, darker runs warmer. |
| Wet grip | Natural texture grips well around water. | Outdoor porcelain comes in textured finishes made for wet areas. |
| The look | Natural stone. Every piece is unique, in silver, ivory, and walnut tones. | Modern and uniform, including wood-look and stone-look styles. |
| Upkeep | Natural stone can be sealed to protect the finish. Individual pieces can be replaced. | Resists fading, staining, and scratching. |
| Price tier | Mid to upper tier. | Premium. |
What we handle either way
The full deck: tear-out of the old surface, grading for drainage, a compacted base, the decking itself, and the coping and borders that frame the water. We install the hardscape around the pool. The pool interior, plaster, waterline tile, and equipment belong to a pool company.
Common questions
- Which one is cooler underfoot?
- Travertine is the safe answer. It reflects heat instead of holding it, which is why it is one of the go-to surfaces around Phoenix pools. Light-colored porcelain can also stay comfortable.
- Can you replace my old pool decking?
- Yes. Removing old decking is part of the job, and we handle the tear-out ourselves. Our work is the deck, coping, and borders around the pool. We don’t touch the pool interior, plaster, tile line, or equipment.
- How do I choose between them?
- We measure your deck at the free on-site visit and put both options in writing so you can compare. Call (602) 872-8352 or request a free quote right here on the site. If we don’t answer, we’re out on a job, so leave a voice message or email us at 3brotherspavers@gmail.com, and we’ll get back to you, usually the same day.
