The short answer
A properly built paver surface is a decades-long installation. The pavers themselves, whether concrete, travertine, or porcelain, handle Arizona sun and heat well. What decides the lifespan isn't the stone on top. It's the work underneath.
What decides it
- 1 The base underneath
- The single biggest factor. A properly excavated and compacted base is what keeps the surface flat year after year. It is the part of the job you never see and the part that matters most.
- 2 Edge restraint
- The border that holds the whole field together. Without it, pavers drift apart at the edges over time.
- 3 Joint sand
- The sand between pavers locks them against each other. Topping it up occasionally keeps the surface tight and discourages weeds.
- 4 Drainage
- Water needs somewhere to go. Grading the surface to drain properly protects the base through monsoon season.
The repair story
This is where pavers earn their keep over the years. A stained, chipped, or settled spot doesn't mean redoing the surface: individual pavers get lifted, the base gets corrected, and the same stones go back down. Compare that with a cracked slab, where the fix is a visible patch or a re-pour.
Common questions
- What maintenance do pavers actually need?
- Not much. Rinse or sweep them like any patio, and top up the joint sand occasionally when it wears low. There is no resurfacing schedule like coatings need.
- Do paver colors fade in the Arizona sun?
- Colors soften a little over the years, like any surface in this sun. Porcelain pavers are the exception: they resist fading, and the color you install is the color you keep.
- What happens if a paver cracks or chips?
- The damaged piece gets lifted and replaced, and the repair blends into the pattern. No patches, no re-pour. Call (602) 872-8352 if you have a surface that needs attention.
